Tactical Communications

"Professionally dealing with the public and

diffusing aggressive behaviour with verbal and non-verbal messages"

TACTICAL COMMUNICATIONS in regard to Use of Force is the

combination of both "Officer Presence" as well as "Communication"

(occasionally used to be called "Verbal Direction") on the

Use of Force Model.  (This is a Canadian Model on the right

however all Police and Security Services will have something like this.)

It is not only a mandatory requirement for 'Use of Force' but if you

think about it - Communication Skills are probably the most used

skill in any officers day to day interactions, more than any other.

But how much training do we give Police and Security members, or

even senior managers for that matter?... It is without a doubt one of

the most important fundamental skills required of those who

"Protect and Serve."

Not only do we need our Communication ability to diffuse aggressive

behaviour and also to manage and resolve conflict, but we also need it in

other areas of day to day duties.

Whether investigating and interviewing or simply building trust and

rapport - developing our communication skills is a required staple.

Tactical Communications is essentially required training for anyone in Law Enforcement.

In every call and incident an officer will always require the use of

Tactical Communications —more often than any other type of training.

It is the principal means of direction by the officer to the public. How the

officer handles each situation or incident ultimately determines whether the

organization or agency is credited or discredited.

Furthermore, the officer’s level of expertise in Tactical Communications

will determine the escalation and, consequently, the outcome of each incident.

Tactical Communications’ aim is to, first, reduce the need to employ higher

force measures and, second, increase an officer’s effectiveness when

physical intervention is necessary.

Tactical Communications training results in:

• Greater situation control

• Greater officer safety

• Improved officer effectiveness

• Greater officer morale

• Increased public satisfaction

 Reduced complaints

 Reduced excessive force issues

BASELINE READS & SCENARIOS

We can all interpret basic human messages right?  Angry? Happy?...

However, how do we change one to another and back again?

Sometimes you do it without knowing...We have all made a relatively happy person upset and a relatively angry person happy or at least pacified, right?  Did you always know how?...

This is one of the things we teach.

We also explore more recent developments in other skills and technologies from reading 'microexpressions' to what to do if someone becomes threatening or even assaultive.
